PS7 classroom students and staff led by Ms. Jessica Tornatore and Ms. Calianne Botsaris (another fantastic speech teacher) worked together in collaborating and working hard to make their presentation at the District 75 Social Studies Fair a success.
They had a lot of fun working on the Mayflower and really enjoyed the Social Studies fair as they made their way through each borough with a passport learning about different social studies topics.
The topic they explored was “A Journey Long Ago: Settling in a New Land.”
Students constructed the Mayflower ship and took a voyage back in time as they sequenced the pilgrims voyage to America. They identified the Dutch people and where they settled and compared and contrasted both the Dutch and Pilgrims. Students compared then and now with housing, clothing and games and connected their lives to now. Students were able to organize information learned using thinking maps (circle maps, flow maps, double bubble maps and tree maps). Each map had guiding questions such as:
- Who are the people that settled in Massachusetts?
- Who are the people that settled in New York?
- How are the Pilgrims and Dutch alike? How are they different?
- What is the Mayflower?
- What is the Mayflower compact?
