A letter from our new Assistant Principal

Dear Parents and Families:

Meghan KozakI am honored to have been chosen to become the next assistant principal at P255Q. I began my educational career as a 1:1 paraprofessional for students with autism. Soon thereafter, I was hired as a literacy coverage teacher for P255Q in February, 2009. I then taught in both 6:1:1 and 8:1:1 middle school classrooms up until last year when I became the unit coordinator at our elementary site in Middle Village. All of these experiences have shaped my educational philosophy and passion for working with our students and their families. I look forward to meeting and working with you and your child in this new role as the assistant principal at our P7 and PS 307 sites. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time. I can be reached via email at mkozak@schools.nyc.gov as well as by phone at 718-899-6528 (P7) or 718-779-5241 (PS 307). Looking forward to an exciting school year together!

Respectfully yours,

Meghan Kozak

November Newsletter

Principal Gregg Lopez Smiling

Hello, we all appreciate the arrival of November and it is here.  As the leaves fall, it signals a time of year when we celebrate the greater school community and give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives.  The connection of school, home, and community is an essential part of P255Q’s vision and mission. With our weekly community experience walks, our elementary students are currently integrating our geography unit of study by learning the names of streets as well as learning how to navigate them safely.  They may also be collecting leaves for an art project. Our middle school students engage in pre-vocational experiences as they are open the School Store in which they learn shopping, stocking, and management skills. They may also use some of local stores as models to practice functional academic skills. Our high school students are beginning real work experiences with St. John’s University, CVS drugstores and Visiting Nursing Services. We are proud of all of the work our students accomplish while engaged in these community activities.

November is also a time for parent teacher conferences.  This is a great opportunity for us to update each other on student progress. Attending conferences provides a chance for teachers to share information specific to your child and for parents to ask important questions.

We just had a school movie night, which was attended by over 70 family members and students. It was a huge success enjoyed by everyone.  Keep checking the school calendar and the school website p225q.org for upcoming events, we hope to see you and your family at one of them soon.

Sincerely,

Gregg Lopez

Election Day Paraprofessional Training

On Tuesday, November 6, paraprofessional staff from each site gathered at PS 154 for a half-day of training. The day began with a Back to Basics PowerPoint by Coach Vernice Borleo and 397 Coordinator Katie McLaughlin. Speech Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists from each site created presentations to refresh the staff on best practices from their respective disciplines as well. Throughout the AM sessions, the paraprofessionals were engaged, entertained, and rewarded for their participation!
