Autism Awareness & Acceptance Outreach Project @ P255q @ PS128

April is Autism Awareness Month. Alison Brennan and the staff at P255q @ PS128 are conducting outreach to the General Education students that we share our school building with. Alison presented a brief introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as a review of the supports we as a school use with our students. At this point, the 6th, 7th & 8th grade students were encouraged to ask any questions they may have about individuals on the Autism Spectrum, as well as share their own experiences. The resulting conversations were interesting, emotional, at times funny, and above all, enlightening. One student said that she did not want to leave to go back to class! The results were also quite astounding, as some of the General Education students immediately went out of their way to help out some of our students! This is what Autism Awareness – and Acceptance is all about!

P255q@PS 128 Celebrates Purple Day!

Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26th annually, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness. Last year, people in dozens of countries on all continents including Antarctica participated in Purple Day! For more information, visit http://www.purpleday.org

On Purple Day, we took the opportunity to discuss Epilepsy, how it impacts our students, and the proper response when an individual has a seizure.

P255Q @ PS 7 Attends the 3rd Annual District 75 Social Studies Fair

PS7 Class X01 created and presented their project entitled “The City that Never Sleeps” during the 3rd Annual District 75 Social Studies Fair held at the New York Historical Society. The project was led by the collaboration between Ms. Arminda Crisostomo and Ms. Calianne Botsaris with the help of Ms. Tiffany Bejarano and Ms. Frimy Parola. The students were accompanied by Ms. Mary Ellen Barnes and Ms. Yubis Lopez.

In this project, the students learned how NYC evolved over time by comparing and contrasting images of past and present New York City. They also made dioramas to highlight the differences between NYC Then and Now. Students researched information about the buildings and constructed a time line to show the order in which the buildings were built. They also used circuits to light up the Empire State Building. Students used bubble maps, double bubble maps, flow maps and bridge maps to organize the information they had learned about New York City.

 

As students made their way to the other schools’ exhibits around the five boroughs of New York City using their passports, they explored and learned different Social Studies topics. It was truly a fun and engaging day filled with knowledge and hands-on learning!

Respect For All Week at 154

During the week of February 11th, students and staff at P255 @ 154 celebrated Respect For All Week with daily activities and themed dress up days.  Respect For All is a program that highlights kindness, compassion for others, inclusion of all, respect for diversity, and the prevention of bullying. Check out below to get a glimpse of what our school did each day.  

Monday: “Caught Being Kind” All acts of kindness were recognized and celebrated with student’s earning certificates throughout the day

Tuesday: “Everyone Fits In Here” Students wrote messages or glued symbols of kindness on puzzle pieces which then formed one large puzzle of unity. This puzzle is displayed in the hallway of our unit.

Wednesday: “Everyone Counts” This was a themed dress up day where students and staff wore clothing with a number.

Thursday: “Wear Red” Students and teachers wore red to be unified to show respected and compassion for each other.

Friday: “I am…” Students created a colorful bored displaying distinctive traits and attributes about themselves. This is on display in the hallway.

In addition, 154 participated in National No One Eats Alone day, which is a lunchtime program where students engage with each other or teachers to increase socialization and promote inclusion of all.

P255 AND QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY ONE ACT PLAY AND DANCE RECITAL REHEARSALS ARE IN FULL SWING!
